Royals? Giants? SI Kids Picks the 2014 World Series!

The World Series begins tonight in… Kansas City? In one of the more improbably match ups, the Kansas City Royals will meet the San Francisco Giants for the 2014 MLB championship. Games 1 and 2 will be played in Kansas City before the series moves to the Bay for Games 3 and 4.

Part of what makes this World Series so unlikely is that both teams were Wild Cards. The Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates to get to the divisional round, while the Royals squeaked past the Oakland A’s in an extra-innings thriller. Neither team won 90 games in the regular season, but in the postseason they have been dominant.

The Giants swept the Washington Nationals then defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in five games to win the National League pennant. The Royals, meanwhile, have been utterly dominant. They swept the Los Angeles Angels — the team with the best record in baseball this season — and then swept the Baltimore Orioles to win the American League crown. Kansas City is 8-0 this postseason, something no other team has accomplished in major league history.

So what does this mean for the World Series? At the very least, it should be a close one. The Giants are looking for their third championship in five years, while the Royals really want to win their first title since 1985. There will also be plenty of Hunter Pence signs in the crowd and sneak-attack bunts on the field (at least from the bunt-happy Royals). And it should be unpredictable.

But let’s try to predict it anyway! The editors of SI Kids weigh in on who they think will carry off the Commissioner’s Trophy as MLB’s 2014 champions!
