Giants Pitcher Yusmeiro Petit Sets MLB Record By Retiring 46 Straight Batters

Here’s a piece of trivia you can use to impress your friends: Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit has gotten more batters out in a row than anyone in Major League Baseball history. The new record: 46.

Petit set the mark this when he struck out Colorado Rockie Charlie Culberson in the third inning of this afternoon’s Giants-Rockies game. By getting Culberson swinging, Petit broke the old record of 45 straight outs, set by White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle in 2009. The next batter, Colorado pitcher Jordan Lyles, hit a double and broke the streak. But still, impressive!

Here’s the historic out. Pay attention to how focused Petit is:

He didn’t even tip his cap to the home crowd. Talk about being in the zone!
