Big Papi Immortalized in Lego Bricks

Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz is calling it a career at the end of the 2016. And he’s going out in style. Through Wednesday, Ortiz has 31 home runs, is batting .316, and has 102 RBI. With those kinds of numbers, he’s leaving baseball at the top of his game. And while teams across the league are sending him out with gifts and mementos, the biggest honor — literally the biggest — was unveiled this morning.

At Fenway Park, Lego introduced it’s more-than-life-size statue of Big Pap made out of Lego bricks. The super-realistic monument immortalizes Ortiz in his signature post-home run stance. It was constructed with 34,510 bricks, took 290 hours to build, weighs 170 pounds, and stands at 6’7”. The tallest point is the top of his left finger, so the statue is basically life-size.

Lego Ortiz is the star of today’s Lego Day at Fenway, and it will be installed permanently in the legendary stadium. So kids (and adults) can be reminded of the real Ortiz’s accomplishments long after he stops playing.
