Venus vs. Serena in Grand Slam Finals

The seventh pro matchup between Venus and Serena Williams was their first in a Grand Slam final. The 21-year-old Venus, beat the 19-year-old Serena 6-2, 6-4 to win her second U.S. Open in a row. The first prime-time U.S. Open women's final drew nearly 23 million viewers.

In a match that featured 13 service breaks, Serena defeated her older sister 7-5, 6-3. Two days later, the rankings showed Venus at No. 1 and Serena at No. 2, the first time siblings were 1-2.

With a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory, Serena captured her first Wimbledon title, won her second Grand Slam tournament in a row and supplanted Venus as the world's top-ranked player.

The third consecutive Grand Slam final between the sisters produced the same result: a straight-sets victory for Serena, who became the fifth woman to win a year's last three majors. Serena went 3-for-3 in major appearances in 2002, missing the Australian Open with an ankle injury.

Serena won her fourth consecutive Grand Slam title, all in finals against Venus, who pushed her younger sister to three sets this time (7-6 [4], 3-6, 6-4).

Venus won the first set despite playing with an abdominal injury, but Serena rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory. With her sixth Grand Slam title, Serena improved to 7-5 overall against Venus.

Venus won her fifth title at the All England Club and avenged two earlier losses in Wimbledon finals to Serena. The 28-year-old Venus broke her sister's serve four times en route to a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
