Paul "Bear" Bryant announces his retirement as head football coach at the University of Alabama. In 25 years in Tuscaloosa, Bryant recorded a 232-46-9 record with six national championships.

Toronto's Alvin Robertson picks up three steals in the Raptors' 122-103 loss at Boston, becoming the third NBA player to move past 2,000 career steals.

The San Francisco 49ers retire Joe Montana's No. 16 during halftime of a game against the Denver Broncos.

Indianapolis WR Marvin Harrison catches nine passes for 172 yards and two TDs to break Herman Moore's single-season reception record (123). Harrison finishes the year with 143 catches.

The Mets announce officially the club has come to terms with Pedro Martinez (16-9, 3.90 ERA) on a four-year, $53 million contract. The former Red Sox ace, who posted 117-37 record in seven seasons with Boston, criticizes his former team for not being more aggressive in retaining his services.
