Highlight of the Weekend: Goalie Goal!
Chances are you missed the Phoenix Coyotes-Detroit Red Wings game on Saturday night. If you did, you missed a Coyotes win — and one of the rarest plays in hockey: a goalie goal!
At the end of the third period, Detroit was down 4-2 and had its goalie pulled. With eight seconds remaining, the Red Wings entered the Phoenix zone and right winger MikaelSamuelsson took a desperation shot from the blue line. Coyotes goalie Mike Smith corralled the puck with his glove, pushed it to his stick, and fired a rocket of a shot to clear the zone. But Smith wasn't just looking to ice the win — he was looking for the net.
And he found it. And the crowd at Jobing.com Arena went nuts. Check it out:
There have only been 14 goals scored by goalies in NHL history, and Smith became only the 11th goalie do it. The first goalie goal was scored by Billy Smith of the New York Islanders in 1980; the last was scored on March 21, 2013, by New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur (who is also the leading goalie scorer with three goals).
