Three to Watch on Super Bowl Sunday
Super Bowl XLVIII features many star players on both the Broncos and Seahawks. And if you hear quarterbacks screaming “Omaha!” or cornerbacks going crazy during the game, you’ll know it’s one of these three guys. These are the big-name quarterbacks and trash-talking cornerbacks that will make the difference Sunday.
The heart and soul of the Broncos, quarterback Peyton Manning will be the focus of many viewers. He is no doubt the MVP of the regular season, breaking the single-season records for passing yards and touchdowns. He led the Broncos to 13 wins, winning eight games by more than 15 points. But the most interesting thing about Peyton is the comments from the media. Reporters have said that he doesn’t do well in big games or cold weather. Many people think that Manning will fall apart because of the cold weather expected at Super Bowl. What?! How can anyone go against the best quarterback in the game, who threw for 55 touchdowns and 5,477 passing yards? Wow. Don’t underestimate Manning when you’re watching the Super Bowl this year.
Next is Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, who almost decided to play baseball instead of football. After graduating from high school, he was selected in the MLB draft but chose to attend N.C. State instead. Four years later, he was drafted in the NFL. After an amazing 2012 season that earned him Rookie of the Year honors, Wilson led the Seahawks to 13 wins and the top seed in the NFC. Many think Wilson will beat Manning, but don’t count on it. Wilson really doesn’t have a dependable receiver besides Golden Tate, while Manning has four reliable wideouts. Wilson will also be without the Seahawks’ home stadium, where he went 7-1 this season. But even with these disadvantages, Wilson should put on a show at MetLife Stadium.
Finally, I’d like to mention Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman. In 2013, he was a first team All-Pro, had eight interceptions, and broke up many passes. His biggest play this year was no doubt in the NFC Championship Game. 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw a pass in the end zone to Michael Crabtree, but it was broken up by Sherman and intercepted by his teammate. He then proceeded to call himself “the best cornerback in the game” to a Fox Sports reporter. I admit, Sherman is a very good cornerback, but that was pretty over the top.
