Harlem Globetrotters Pick Brittney Griner, Mariano Rivera In Upside Down Draft

If you could draft anyone for your basketball team, who would be your top pick? Maybe one of the best young basketball players in the world. That makes sense. But how about the best closer in baseball history?

Yeah, that sounds silly, right? Not to the Harlem Globetrotters.

While the basketball world was focused on the NBA Draft, the Globetrotters held their own draft — and it's not your typical rookie class! On Tuesday, the fun-loving, trick-shot-making team selected five athletes to join its ranks. Future WNBA superstar Brittney Griner, college slam dunk champs Doug Anderson and Corey Law, Northwood University point guard Tyrone Davis and Yankees all-star and iceman Mariano Rivera.

That last pick still sounds weird. Are you sure you meant to draft that Mariano Rivera?

"In the fourth quarter, when the Globetrotters need to close out a game, who better than the best closer of all-time?" Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider asked. "We always have a place on our roster for winning athletes with that kind of mindset."

Can't argue with that. Watch out Washington Generals!

But it makes you think: What other non-basketball players would make good additions to the hardcourt?

From the NHL, the Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin would be a natural — he's fast, agile, and knows how to tickle the twine. Troy Polamalu from the Steelers would be a beast on defense, swatting away jumpers and blocking dunks the way he crushes running backs and quarterbacks on Sundays.

But what do you think? If you were putting together your own Dream Team made up of athletes from any sport, who would make the cut?
