Max Scherzer Throws His Second No-Hitter of the Season!

There's no other way to say it: this has been a lousy season for the Washington Nationals. They entered the 2015 as one of the favorites to win the World Series. But after a year that saw the team collapse in July and August, manager Matt Williams make a whole bunch of questionable decisions, and a dugout brawl between superstar Bryce Harper and pitcher Jonathan Papelbon, the Nats will spend October at home.

But there has been one very bright spot in Washington: pitcher Max Scherzer, who threw his second no-hitter of the season Saturday night at Citi Field in a 2-0 win against the Mets. He also pitched a no-no in Washington on June 20 against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"These things are special," Scherzer said. "To do it twice in one season, my gosh, it doesn't seem possible."




Scherzer is the sixth pitcher to throw two no-hitters in a season. The last one to do it was Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay in 2010 when he tossed one in the regular season and a second in the playoffs. The last pitcher to throw two in the regular season was Nolan Ryan, who did it in 1973 for the California Angels.

The other pitchers to do it are Johnny Vander Meer, who threw back-to-back no-nos in 1938; Virgil Trucks, and Allie Reynolds.

Scherzer's no-hitter was the seventh of the 2015 MLB season. It was also the second at Citi Field this year. San Francisco's Chris Heston threw the first no-hitter of the season in New York on June 9.

"To throw a no-hitter sometimes it takes a little luck," Scherzer said. "I was able to execute all four of my pitches whether I was behind in the count or ahead in the count."
