The History of the Baseball Cap

In New York last week, New Era hosted an event at the MLB Fan Cave to talk about its new line of baseball caps, the Diamond Era 59Fifty. On hand to talk about them were representatives from New Era, former MLB-er Al Leiter, and Mets third baseman David Wright. But before they talked about the new caps, Erik Strohl of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown talked about some old baseball headwear.

Strohl brought six historical baseball caps to the event, including one from 1866 — the oldest baseball hat in existence! The others spanned baseball's history, from a hat worn during the first game at Fenway to a cap worn in the 2008 World Baseball Classic. Why are these caps important? How did they help pave the way for the hats we all know and wear today? Check out the slideshow and find out!
