The long-rumored sequel (reboot?) of Space Jam starring LeBron James is actually happening with Justin Lin of Fast & Furious fame attached as director. If you've never seen the original Space Jam, it starred Michael Jordan, who plays basketball alongside Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Toons regulars to recover the stolen powers of other NBA stars. Here's one classic scene:
When SI Kids debuted in January 1989, Jordan didn't have a single championship on his résumé. But the 25-year-old was coming off back-to-back scoring titles, making him a natural pick for the first-ever SIK cover. Keep clicking to see some of MJ's most memorable -- and wacky -- photos ever.
Jordan's second SIK cover shoot, for the May 1992 issue, would turn out to be the wildest. (Side note: MJ isn't the only celebrity on this cover. The girl over his left shoulder is Jennifer Morrison, who went on to become an actress and currently stars in the FOX show House M.D.).
Jordan in this hippie disguise is also from the May 1992 issue. MJ didn't know he'd be dressing up that day, and he laughed when he arrived at the shoot and saw the photographer, George B. Fry III, wearing this afro wig. "We were in hysterics a lot of the time," says Fry.
Buzz Beamer shared the March 1999 cover with MJ, who had announced his second retirement that January (the NBA season started late because of a lockout). It was the last time he appeared on the cover in a Bulls uniform, but Jordan wasn't done in the NBA just yet.
Jordan's latest SIK cover appearance came exactly 20 years after the first. He joined Shaquille O'Neal, Michael Phelps, and LeBron James as four of the greatest athletes of the past 20 years shared the SI Kids 20th Anniversary cover.
