With the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers set to face off in Super Bowl 50 this Sunday (6:30 p.m. ET, CBS), I thought it'd be fun to revisit what we at SI Kids wrote about them in our NFL season preview issue way back in September. We did yearbook-style superlatives for each team — here's what we wrote about the Broncos:
MOST LIKELY TO ... earn a perfect attendance award. Manning has not missed the playoffs in a healthy season since 2001.
We were nearly wrong here — Manning would have sat out the playoffs had he not reclaimed his starting job from Brock Osweiler with a strong Week 17 performance. And during the regular season, he certainly didn't have a perfect attendance record. He started only nine games, thanks to injuries and benchings. But all's well that ends well: The Broncos are back in the Super Bowl, and Manning is at the helm in what could very well be his last game.
Here's what we said about the Panthers:
MOST LIKELY TO ... grow up and leave their awkward stage behind. The Panthers won back-to-back NFC South championships as a wildly inconsistent team. (Last year they became the fourth team to make the playoffs with a losing record.) But this could be the year they finally put in a complete season.
We definitely nailed this one, although even we didn't have the Panthers pegged to go 15–1. After all, we picked the Seahawks to play the Colts in Super Bowl 50. Nobody's perfect!
LDRIC, a robot named after Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods, got a hole-in-one on the TPC Scottsdale course's sixteenth hole. The bot's namesake made a similar shot back in 1997.
Last year's Madden Super Bowl prediction got it exactly right, foretelling a 28–24 Patriots comeback from a 24–14 Seahawks lead. This year, the folks behind the popular video game have simulated a 24–20 win, thanks to a last-minute Cam Newton rushing touchdown. If the game is right, it'll be 10–3 all time at picking the winner.
Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse fought Ottawa's Max McCormick last night and got the knock out. Be sure to watch to the end of the video to see his parents cheering in the stands.
Charles Barkley didn't spare anyone or anything in his rant against the Suns...not even the arena food.
