Chandler Parsons has really changed things up this season.
First he traded in his red and white Houston Rockets jersey for the blue and silver of the Dallas Mavericks. And tonight he makes a guest appearance on the Disney XD show Kirby Buckets.
The show debuted this fall and takes viewers into the wild imagination of 13-year-old wannabe animator Kirby Buckets (Jacob Bertrand). It blends live action with animation as the real-world Kirby’s drawings come to life.
Parsons got involved with Kirby Buckets when his agent contacted him about the opportunity to guest star. Wanting to display his non-basketball talents, the forward decided that a Disney channel cameo was the way to go.
On the show, Parsons is a huge fan of Eli (Cade Sutton), one of the show’s main characters. Eli has no interest in entertaining Parsons’ fandom, which leads to an emotional breakdown by Parsons. That’s right — we get to see Chandler Parsons cry.
Or, at least act like it.
“I just had a crying scene, which was pretty intense,” Parsons said while filming in Los Angeles. “I can’t [cry on command], but the off-camera crew gave me some drops so it looks like I can.”
Parsons also gets into a food fight with the cast during the episode. And we’ve heard the food of choice for the battle is chili.
Off camera, the cast of the show took lots of photos and talked basketball with the Mavericks’ newest addition.
‘They were talking one-on-one and asked if I can dunk and if I can get them courtside seats to my game,” Parsons said. “I’m a fan of the show, and they’re a fan of basketball, so it works.”
After his stint on the show, Parsons was back to basketball. He’s played 50 games so far this season, averaging 33.1 minutes and 15.7 points per game. More important than numbers, though, is Parsons time with on the same team as Dirk Nowitzki.
“He was one of my favorite players growing up,” Parsons said. “So now to be able to play with him, and hopefully have success with him — basically learn from one of the greatest ever — is huge for me.”
Parsons added he wants to be a “sponge” around Nowitzki, soaking up any and all basketball knowledge he can from the 12-time All-Star.
He’s also looking forward to being a part of Mark Cuban’s team, who Parsons considers “the best owner in sports.”
As a player, Chandler Parsons likes to exude attributes such as confidence, a team-centric mentality, and versatility. And he’s certainly done that this season — whether it’s scoring buckets on the court or hanging out with Kirby Buckets off it.
Chandler Parsons guest stars on Kirby Buckets, airing on Disney XD February 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
