Clint Dempsey helped lead the Sounders to a key win over the Timbers on Sunday, scoring twice in the second half of a 3–1 victory.
With the rival Sounders and Timbers locked in race for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, Dempsey’s two goals helped Seattle move to within a point of Portland in the standings.
Dempsey’s first goal came in the 61st minute after Cristian Roldan earned a penalty. Dempsey fooled the keeper with a kick down the middle.
Roldan laid the ball off to Dempsey in the 80th minute and the veteran buried a shot in the far low corner.
Roldan found the net himself three minutes later to stretch the lead to 3–0. Portland’s Fanendo Adi made it 3–1 with a goal in the third minute of stoppage time.
