New York was already red entering 2016 in MLS, and it most certainly continues to be after Saturday's thrashing at Yankee Stadium.
The New York Red Bulls defeated NYCFC 7-0 in the first of three meetings this season, with Dax McCarty and Bradley Wright-Phillips each scoring twice and 20-year-old Manhattan native Alex Muyl scoring the first goal of his MLS career as part of as one-sided a match as there has been in league history. The seven-goal margin matches wins by the LA Galaxy in 2001 and Chicago Fire in 1998, according to MLS records, and it comes on the heels of the Red Bulls's season sweep of NYCFC last year.
McCarty, all 5'9" of him, scored on two headers off of corner kicks, and the Red Bulls dominated on set pieces, scoring four off set plays in total.
McCarty set the tone for the day in the third minute, heading home from Sacha Kljestan's service.
Just when it looked like NYCFC would only go into halftime with the 1-0 deficit, Wright-Phillips struck for his first. Mike Grella did the heavy lifting with some impressive 1-v-1 dribbling, beating multiple defenders. He crossed from the end line, and Wright-Phillips headed it in from point-blank range.
Wright-Phillips got his second in more spectacular fashion, turning in a phenomenal bicycle kick in stoppage time to seize full momentum and make it 3-0.
As it turns out, the Red Bulls weren't even halfway finished with their demolition. McCarty replicated his first-half effort in the 51st off another Kljestan corner kick.
Five minutes later, an atrocious giveaway let Wright-Phillips set up Muyl for an uncontested finish from inside the NYCFC box.
With the match well in hand and the Red Bulls leading 5-0, Gonzalo Veron eased his way to a corner kick by the far post, nodding down an unmarked header for the sixth.
Gideon Baah slide home the seventh in the 89th minute, completing the rout and crashing NYCFC back to earth after its recent three-game winning streak.
If there's a silver lining for NYCFC it's that Frank Lampard and No. 1 overall draft pick Jack Harrison made their season debuts after struggling with their respective ailments, but that's little consolation after a massive hit to the club's progress and pride.
