Barcelona's Lionel Messi has won the UEFA goal of the season award for his chip in a November Champions League match against Roma, the league announced on Thursday.
In his first appearance since returning from injury, Messi combined brilliantly with teammates Luis Suarez and Neymar before lofting the ball over the head of Roma's goalkeeper and in, much to the delight of the raucous crowd at Camp Nou. Barcelona went on to win the match, 6–1.
UEFA website users voted for Messi's goal 73,331 times, giving him 34% of the total vote.
The second-place finisher—Portugal's Ricardinho during the UEFA Futsal Championship—received just 13% of the vote. Other finalists included Switzerland's Xherdan Shaqiri at Euro 2016 and Atlético Madrid’s Saul Ñiguez against Bayern.
