Monday night’s NCAA Raleigh Regional Championship game between Coastal Carolina and North Carolina State was suspended at the absolute worst (or, best) time.
Down 5–3, Coastal was threatening with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth and one out. Then, as junior G.K. Young walked to the plate, rain began to fall. The game was delayed 39 minutes, and at 12:05 a.m. ET, it was postponed.
Poor G.K. had to wait 14 hours, until 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, to bat with the bases loaded, thinking about nothing except the pressure of that AB.
When the game resumed, G.K. drove in a run on a groundout, bringing Coastal within one and leaving the bases loaded with two down. Then, pinch-hitter Tyler Chadwick was hit by a pitch to tie the game, and two singles later, Coastal had a two-run lead, which they’d hang on to for the win.
It was bedlam.
It’s on to the Super Regionals for Coastal Carolina. They’ll hope for another interrupted game.
