Derek Andrews is the 2008 Sports Kid of the Year.

After four rounds of voting and tens of thousands of votes, SIKIDS.com readers have spoken: Derek Andrews is your Sports Kid of the Year. All ten of our finalists were stellar candidates, but Derek had the right stuff. An eight-year-old multi-sport athlete, Derek plays baseball, hockey, soccer, and basketball. He was named to an All-Star team in baseball and a select team in hockey. He is also the leading scorer on his basketball team. What’s most amazing about Derek is that he manages to do all this while suffering from a muscle disorder.

Plus, Derek isn’t just a champ on the field - he is pretty much good at everything he does. He won a reading contest last year by finishing 305 books. He also got first place in an essay contest run by a local bank asking what he would do with a million dollars. He used his prize money to hire a magician to come to a nearby children’s hospital, organized a book drive for a local school and bought supplies for the elephants at the Buffalo Zoo.
