The Stinky Five: August 24

Over the weekend I had softball practice in the rain. I forgot to take my cleats out of my bag afterwards. So they just sat in there, soaking wet, for a whole day.

If you’ve never smelled day old soaking wet cleats, let me tell you, the only think stinkier are these five teams…

1. Arizona Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks, it could be argued, have been baseball’s most disappointing team this season. They were projected to challenge for a playoff, but haven’t been close all season. They’re not even putting up a fight at season’s end, winning just once in their last six games.

2. Chicago Cubs
The Cubs must really hate the west coast. Earlier this month, they lost three of four in Colorado. And in their last seven games, all against the NL West, they managed just two wins. The Cubs will be happy to get home, but their fans might not be too thrilled to see them.

3. Washington Nationals
Picking on the Washington Nationals is not fun. It’s like kicking someone who is already on the ground. I try to lay off, but then they go on a 1-5 stretch and hit just .246 as a team. That’s good enough for a guaranteed spot in the stinky five.

4. Kansas City Royals
The Royals posted a .280 batting average over their last five games, but scored just 21 runs while leaving 34 runners on base. They also made multiple errors in two of their five games this week. There’s almost nothing about this team that ISN’T stinky.

5. New York Mets
Call it a curse, call it bad luck, but the Mets just wrapped up an 11-game home stand with a 4-7 record. They lost three of four to the Phillies, including one game that ended with an unassisted triple play. The Mets are finding the most ridiculous ways to lose, but however they do it, it’s always stinky.
