I've been wrong to think he's a fluke.
All season, I've been waiting for Blue Jays 2B Aaron Hill ($3,100,000) to cool off. It doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Now, I've always thought that Hill would one day develop 20-home run power. But I didn't think he'd ever have 20-home-runs-in-half-a-season power! Right now, Hill has a career-high 19 homers, putting him on pace to hit about 40. He's also hitting .305 with 56 RBIs. If he had better on-base skills (just .344 on-base percentage), he'd be a legitimate MVP candidate!
Now, do I think Hill will continue on this pace? No. After all, while he has 19 homers, he only has 13 doubles and no triples. As the year wears on, some of those homers are going to fall short.
Still, considering how cheap he is, Hill might be the best value their is at second base.

Speaking of unexpected surprises, how about Padres RP Chad Gaudin ($4,100,000) last week! Coming into this season, he was pretty much considered a washed-up mop up man. But he broke into the Padres starting rotation, and was pretty darn good last week: Try a 2-0 record, 1.20 ERA, and a whopping 20 strikeouts in just 15 innings! So please give Chad a big round of applause as we award him the highest honor in professional sports, the Wizzy of the Week Award.
I know Manny Ramirez is coming back this weekend, but sheesh Juan Pierre, you weren't supposed to stop playing yet! Pierre hit just .208 last week. We know he doesn't hit for power (just one double for his only extra-base hit of the week), but he also stole only one base. So please give Juan no applause as we give him the lowest honor in professional sports, the Smelly Human Being of the Week Award.
