Here's a bit of advice: Home runs aren’t the only way to pile up fantasy baseball points.
Sure, you want a masher on your team like Rays 3B Evan Longoria ($6,600,000; eight HRs). But RBIs and stolen bases are each worth one point apiece. That makes guys like Angels 3B Chone Figgins ($5,000,000) and Rays OF Carl Crawford ($4,400,000) – who don’t hit for power but swipe loads of bags – just as valuable as some of their more expensive counterparts.
Got it? Good. Let’s proceed…
Remember, these players are chosen because they offer the best chance to fill your fantasy baseball roster with a healthy mix of high-priced stars and highly-productive affordables. DO NOT PUT TOGETHER A TEAM CONSISTING ONLY OF THESE PLAYERS! If you do, you’re going to lose your fantasy matchup pretty badly. Instead, draft your favorite A-List players first. Then, when you’re low on dough and you still have some roster spots to fill, use the following list as a guide of the best cheap players available.
Starting Pitcher
Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins ($4,300,000) – In his last three starts, Johnson has a 2.21 ERA, 21 strikeouts, and just three walks.
Relief Pitcher
Jonathan Broxton, Los Angeles Dodgers ($4,200,000) – In 13 appearances this season, Broxton has 25 strikeouts. Over that same span, he’s allowed just one earned run. One. That’s it.
Catcher
Victor Martinez, Cleveland Indians ($3,500,000) – Five games into May, Martinez has already racked up three doubles, three RBIs, and five walks.
First Baseman
Russell Branyan, Seattle Mariners ($3,200,000) – Branyan is hitting .367 with three HRs over his last seven games.
Second Baseman
Mike Fontenot, Chicago Cubs ($4,300,000) – Chicago’s high-powered offense allows Fontenot plenty of opportunities to score runs (12 so far this season) and drive them in (15 RBIs).
Third Baseman
Chone Figgins, Los Angeles Angels ($5,000,000) – Figgins doesn’t have much pop. Actually, he doesn’t have any (zero HR). But he leads all major league third basemen in stolen bases (10) and walks (17).
Shortstop
Jason Bartlett, Tampa Bay Rays ($4,900,000) – Bartlett is the league leader among shortstops in batting average (.358), hits (34), stolen bases (6), slugging (.495), and OPS (.891). Wow.
Leftfield
Carl Crawford, Tampa Bay Rays ($5,100,000) – 19 stolen bases (including six against the Red Sox during a single game!). Need I say more?
Centerfield
Franklin Gutierrez, Seattle Mariners ($4,400,000) – Over his last seven games (which coincidentally followed treatment for an eye infection), Gutierrez is hitting .480 with two HRs and six RBIs.
Rightfield
Nelson Cruz, Texas Rangers ($3,000,000) – The sole returning LBAS from last week, Cruz’s offensive production (seven HRs, 20 RBIs) is just too good to ignore. Especially at this price.
