Head-to-Head: Will Rondo Ever Be Suspended?!

After Duane from New Jersey and I argued a couple weeks ago about who should win the Rookie of the Year award, it looked like we would never be friends again. Then Derrick Rose officially won the award. Of course, this didn't mean Duane from NJ would ever admit he was wrong, but it did afford me the chance to take the fine photo you see on the right. I'm the one holding up a shirt celebrating Derrick Rose's Rookie of the Year campaign. Duane's the one hiding behind the shirt.

But a funny thing happened after our ROY argument: We actually wound up on the same side of a head-to-head argument. See, Duane and I are both shocked that Rajon Rondo hasn't been punished more harshly by the NBA commissioner's office for some of his actions during the thrilling first-round playoff series between the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls. Here's an e-mail exchange we had discussing what Rondo would have to do to finally be suspended for a game...

…to get suspended???

Grab someone by the wrist and toss them into the scorer’s table?

Oh. Wait.

HE DID THAT!

I bet he could throw one of his sneakers at David Stern during Game 7 and they wouldn’t even give him a T.

I bet he could pants Dick Bavetta at half court before tip-off of Game Seven and then frame it on Kirk Hinrich.

I bet he could toss the ball into the stands and convince everyone he was trying to stop the Bulls mascot from making a layup during the TV timeout.

I’m pretty sure Rondo could read Section IV b. of the NBA Rule Book, which states: If contact committed against a player, with or without the ball, is interpret-ed to be unnecessary and excessive, a flagrant foul--penalty (2) will be assessed…and the refs would just laugh and say “Rondo, you so crazy!”

He could probably call timeout, run into the locker room, put on football pads, run back onto the court and start tackling people while screaming “click-clack” and “we must protect this house”… and everyone would just marvel at his defensive tenacity. Either that, or John Madden would appear from nowhere and say, “boy, Rondo sure is having fun out there.”

Oh well, all of our belly-aching won't fix this. I have to admit that Kirk Hinrich himself didn't think Rondo's actions warranted a suspension. Still, Rondo followed through on a violent act towards another player with no intention of making a basketball play. Coming on the heels of his smack to the face of Brad Miller in Game 5, and Dwight Howard's one-game suspension for a play far closer to the ball, and I feel like Rondo needs to sit for Game Seven, no matter how bad that is for the competitive nature of this series.
