Who is Baseball's All-Time Hit King?

Who is baseball’s all-time hit leader?

It seems like such a simple question, involving sports’ most fundamental record. But it has now become the subject of controversy after Ichiro Suzuki logged his 4,257th professional hit this past season, passing Pete Rose’s long-standing major league record of 4,256, set in 1986.

At the time of the record setting-hit, however, Ichiro had only 2,980 in Major League Baseball. The other 1,278 had happened in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), Japan’s highest league, over the course of eight years before Ichiro joined the Mariners. Should his Japanese hits count toward breaking an American record?
