Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final was played last night, and the Bruins and Blackhawks needed three overtimes to determine a winner. The teams played 112 minutes and 8 seconds worth of hockey, which was good for the fifth longest NHL Finals game of all time.
So how does a team win such a long game? There's really only one way. Ugly.
Coming into the series, the Bruins had won five in a row, including a sweep of the Penguins in the Eastern Conference Final. In that span, Boston only gave up three total goals. But the Blackhawks put an end to all that. They scored four goals, take a 1-0 series lead and force the Bruins to do something they haven't done all postseason — play catch up.
