This time of year superheroes aren't only found on baseball diamonds, in hockey rinks, and on basketball courts; we also get to see them in big budget, special effects-filled movies. But there’s another place to find superpowered do-gooders now: online! If you've ever wondered what sort of super hero you'd actually be, a nifty new browser-based video game called Herotopia has the answer.
Here's how it works: You build your very own super hero persona--sorry, but Sports Gamer Man has already been claimed--then tour the globe, visiting locations like the North Pole, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Statue of Liberty in New York, etc. Along the way, you'll perform feats of strength, maybe learn a cultural fact or two, and best of all, deliver a one-two punch to the evil Bully Bunch, which functions as your in-game nemesis. That's right, Bully Bunch--you're going down.
Playing mini-games rewards you with what the game calls Topia Tokens, which is in-game currency you use to decorate your secret hideout/lair/fortress of solitude, purchase new things like capes for your hero, and even hire a monkey sidekick. Confession: the Sports Gamer has always secretly wanted a monkey sidekick.
If I could pick one fantasy super power, I'd choose to fly, because I can't stand being stuck in traffic jams. And if I could pick one real-world super power, it would be the ability to meet deadlines and file my Sports Gamer columns on time. Call me... Deadline Man. Actually, now that I think about it, that sounds kind of cool.
Now it's time for me to turn the tables: What would you fantasy and real super powers be? Hit me up in the comments! But before you choose, remember, with great power comes great responsibility.
