The Story: Seattle's original baseball team was the Pilots, which moved east and became the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970. When major league baseball returned to the Pacific Northwest in 1977, the franchise held a name the team contest. Mariner, which is another word for a sailor, ended up being the pick. It was a natural fit for a city located right on Puget Sound, where sea life has always been a big part of the culture.
