Richmond had already established itself as a giant killer by beating Charles Barkley's Auburn team in 1984 and Bob Knight's defending national champion Hoosiers in 1988, but this was the school's crowning achievement. The Spiders became the first No. 15 seed ever to beat a No. 2, knocking off a talented Syracuse team lead by All-American Billy Owens.
