The Canucks enforcer had an early and prominent role in an NHL season filled with headshots, brawls and assorted controversies. With his team playing the Wild in Minnesota, Rypien was heckled as he left the ice after a second-period scrum. He reached up and grabbed a fan who was applauding at the railing, and had to be pulled away by teammates. For his indiscretion, Rypien received a six-game suspension from the NHL and the Canucks were fined $25,000.
