10 Questions With...Maya Moore
Maya Moore knows a thing or two about winning. At the University of Connecticut she led the Huskies women's basketball team a 150–4 record and two national championships from 2007–10. She didn't stop there. In her first year in the WNBA, Moore helped the Minnesota Lynx to a WNBA-best 27–7 record, earning the 2011 Rookie of the Year award.
This October, Moore will be extending her winning ways off the court by dishing an assist to the NBA Hoop Troop, a program that seeks to get kids involved in basketball. The Hoop Troop is holding a contest in which one grand-prize winner between the ages of six and 14 will get to take part in a basketball-themed shopping spree with Moore in her hometown of Atlanta. (For more information, visit NBAHoopTroop.com.) Moore clearly has her act together, but can she handle SIKIDS.com's 10 questions? Read on to find out!
1. What time is your alarm clock set for in the morning?
8am, because we have a 10 o'clock practice.
2. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Mint chocolate chip. A close second would be cookies and cream.
3. What was your childhood nickname?
There was a cartoon on when I was a kid called Maya the Bee, so some of the adults in my church used to call me Maya the Bee. That show doesn't come on anymore, so not a lot of people have heard of it. I was in elementary school.
4. If you weren't an athlete which career would you choose?
Something in music. I play the drums. I've been playing since I was nine. It's a hobby — I was never in a band or played it for school or anything. I bought a set when I was a kid and played whenever I could.
5. Why do you wear the jersey number that you do?
Twenty three has a lot of different reasons. A lot of great players have worn it. In high school I was 32, but when I got to college 32 was taken so the closest thing to 32 and also a pretty great number was 23.
6. What is your favorite city to compete in?
New York is fun. Madison Square Garden is always a fun place. I like San Antonio as well, because I won an undefeated national championship [in college] in San Antonio. And it's also fun to play in Atlanta — that's my hometown.
7. What's your favorite thing to do on your days off?
Just hang out outside if the weather's nice. I like hanging out outside, just reading or having some quiet time. Or anything having to do with music.
8. Who is the greatest athlete of all time?
For women, I would say some of the athletes in track and field like Jackie Joyner Kersee and Marion Jones. For men, Michael Jordan. When you type in "best athlete" in Google, his name is going to come up. You can't argue with that.
9. Who is your best friend in sports?
I don't use best friend status a lot, so I'll just name a close friend. Let's go with Geno Auriemma. My old head coach — I'm going to show him some love. Maybe we'll stop playing phone tag and catch up with each other. He's a hard person to get a hold of! But I am too.
10. What's the last item that you purchased?
I just bought a fedora hat. I feel like that's the next step. You know, I'm a professional; I'm going to buy a fedora. I've never been a hat person but I like those.
