With hopes of staying together even longer, AL championship series MVP Cruz and two-time defending AL champion Texas avoided arbitration by agreeing Thursday to a $16 million, two-year contract.

Fielder reaches deal with Tigers 11

DETROIT (AP) -- Free agent first baseman Prince Fielder and the Detroit Tigers agreed Tuesday on a nine-year, $214 million contract that fills the AL Central champions' need for a power hitter, a person familiar with the deal said.

CBS first reported the agreement.

The person told the Associated Press that the deal was subject to a physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract was not yet complete.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Yu Darvish is coming to America to pitch, for the team he really wanted to join for his next challenge.

Japan's best pitcher will play for the Texas Rangers, who scouted him for more than two years and then needed nearly every minute of a 30-day negotiating window before finalizing a $60 million, six-year contract Wednesday. It is a total investment of more than $111 million with a record posting fee.

Padres get Quentin from White Sox for 2 prospects 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Padres have acquired two-time All-Star outfielder Carlos Quentin from the Chicago White Sox in an attempt to bolster their anemic offense.

Quentin grew up in the San Diego area and was a two-time All-Star with the White Sox. He has four consecutive 20-homer seasons, including 36 in 2008.

The White Sox will receive minor league pitchers Simon Castro, a right-hander, and Pedro Hernandez, a left-hander.

Rangers win rights to negotiate with Japanese star Yu Darvish 3

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Texas Rangers won the Yu Darvish sweepstakes and the chance to negotiate a contract with Japan's top pitcher.

Major League Baseball announced Monday night that the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of Japan's Pacific League informed the U.S. commissioner's office that they have accepted the highest bid for Darvish.

That sealed bid was submitted under the posting system by the Rangers, winners of the past two AL pennants. Now, they have 30 days to sign Darvish to a deal.

"Our ownership went the extra mile on this one," general manager Jon Daniels said on a conference call.

Free-agent starting pitcher C.J. Wilson has signed a five-year, $77.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels, according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports.

Wilson was considered by many to be one of the top pitching prizes on the free-agent market this winter. The 31-year-old posted a 16-7 record this season for the Texas Rangers, while also recording a 2.94 ERA in over 220 innings of work. Today’s signing means the culmination of a seven-year career for Wilson in Texas, in which he served five years as a reliever, two as a starter, and helped the club reach two World Series.

Pujols to sign 10-year deal with Angels 14
