Jazz Send Star Point Guard Williams to Nets

The Utah Jazz have agreed to send All-Star point guard Deron Williams to New Jersey in a multi-team deal, has confirmed. The Jazz will receive rookie power forward Derrick Favors, point guard Devin Harris, two first-round draft picks and $3 million cash.

The Nets are also close to finalizing a deal that would send Troy Murphy's expiring contract to Golden State in exchange for big men Dan Gadzuric and Brandan Wright.

The surprising blockbuster comes after the Nets struck out on attracting LeBron James last summer in free agency, and Carmelo Anthony in a trade with Denver.

Harris and Favors, the No. 3 picks in last summer's draft, were part of the package the Nets were offering Denver for Anthony.

Williams, who's averaging 21.3 points and is third in the league in assists with 9.7 per game, is signed through next season and has a $17.8 million player option for 2012-13. There was a growing belief within the Jazz organization that Williams would opt out of his contract and sign elsewhere, and Utah was likely going to trade him next season to avoid losing him in free agency. He was expectd to be one of the headliners of the 2012 free-agent class, along with Magic center Dwight Howard and Hornets point guard Chris Paul.

The Nets now hope to sign Williams to a contract extension, which they can offer this summer. If so, he would become the face of their franchise when they move into their new arena in Brooklyn in 2012.

The 26-year-old guard and former longtime coach Jerry Sloan reportedly had a heated exchange during halftime of the Jazz's frustrating loss to the Chicago a couple weeks ago. Though Sloan denied the dustup as reason for his resignation the following day, it's been reported that Sloan grew tired of the struggles with Williams and was ready to end it.

The Record of Bergen County, N.J. first reported the deal.

Toooooooooooooooo baaaaaaaaaaaaaddddddddddd for Utah

I don't know what to think haha

that's so stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

why would they trade williams for harris adipurperpe

oh, and Si kids, that is a possible reason for why jerry left, but you know it could have been the other way around. Ive read on other sport sources that sloan could have left for the complete other reason! He could have left because he heard that they were trading D-Will and he didnt want to deal with all the "new" stuff you have to do. You cant just trade a player and be done. you have to do a lot of prep like teaching the guys the routine. Or he might have just thought deron was good and they should trade him.

Deron is my favorite player! he is so awesome and i understand that it was a smart trade for utah, but its hard to see him leave my favorite team. i will still cheer for him but it will be hard to watch the jazz without him :( . I love you deron! You rock! <3

JK a good trade is john wall for d.rose

John Wall doesn't play in the NHL!?!?

jhon wall is the best player in the NHL hands down

that's a stupid trade!!!

Yeah right. Why would the Bulls send off their best player for a rookie?

IT WAS A GREAT TRADE FOR NJ!!! i cant imagine what utah was thinking harris is good but not THAT GOOD

best point guard trade thats actually good

I've had 2 main issues about the SI Kids basketball. First in all the magazines it says the East is the stronger division and that is NOT true. Although they have some tough teams, i look at my hometown team Phoenix Suns and they are 10th in the West and currently today Phoenix has a better record than 6th seed New York Knicks! Also why in the latest magazine does it say Amare is bringing winning back to the Big Apple if they are 2 games over .500? I know New York has been a terrible team the previous decade, but they make it sound like New York is the number 1 seed in the East.
Please Respond if you agree, or not.

Basketball is very good sport and is very fun. Basketball player and teeams there very cool.

yes i agree, but you put 2 e's in teams

I like the nets and they just gave away Derrick Favors, Devin Harris and two first round draft picks. It was such a horrible trade for the Nets.

Bad choice.

This could be good or bad for Utah...let's hope good!

Now Utah has a hope for getting "THE JIMMER SHOW!"
