Right-hander Joel Pineiro, one of the top free-agent pitchers remaining on the market, has reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Angels, sources told SI.com
The contract is said to be $16 million for two years. The New York Mets are believed to have offered $15 million for two years, and they might have been willing to go a little higher to seal the deal.
News of the the agreement was first reported by Newsday.
Pineiro went 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals last season. He walked just 27 batters in 214 innings and posted a 60.5 percent groundball rate due to a newfound sinker.
The Angels hope Pineiro will help fill a hole created by the departure of John Lackey, who left the AL West champions for a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox.
Pineiro joins a rotation that includes Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders, Scott Kazmir and Ervin Santana.

Pinero was an amazing Cardinal pitcher. I have no clue who could replace him.
im happy the halo's traded vladdy. all the angel fans disagree with me. when you really think about it, he didn't contribute at the dish a whole lot. figgins did a little bit better but the guy who had a great year was hunter. he played hard every game. the athletics are pretty much done. but the AL west competition is going to be good this year. I think the mariners will give a good fight.
go mariners!
You wish, angels will win
15-12 isn't that good. He had a couple good games though I believe one of his best last year was against the Mets.
Superstar Shortstop 14,
15 and 12 is a pretty good record. Pinero's 15 wins ranked 21st in major league baseball. Besides, you can't rank a player on his record because his wins depend on his offense. He his offense doesn't work that game, he has a small chance of winning, no matter how well he pitches.
The stat that you should look at is his 3.49 ERA. That mark ranks closly to excelent starting pitchers like Jonathan Lester, Justin Verlander, and Edwin Jackson.
15-12 with a 3.49 ERA is nothing to be ashamed of, while he wont fill Lackey's shoes, Joel Pinero is a good pickup.
ESPN has reported that Jose Contreas of the White Sox has agreed to a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.
YEAH GO PHIGHTIN PHILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pinero definetly doesnt make up for the loss of Lacky but it helps the Angels staff a little.
Pinero has spent lots of his career in the American League so he knows the hitters pretty well.
I think this will be a nice boost for the Angels staff but they are gonna need a much bigger to replace the loss of Lackey
Baseball Nerd 13,
Pinero IS an underrated pitcher, but he's trying to make up for one of the best pitchers in the league.
Pinero will not fill Lackey's shoes.
If Weaver, Santana, Saunders, or Kazmir can step up and pitcher great this year, the Angel's rotation should be great this year.
no they won't. Pinero is a underrated pitcher
Too bad the Red Sox took Jonh Lackey from the Angels. Ha ha! Go Red Sox!
First I'm a Cardinals fan. I'm sad he left, he was good for the team. I also feel he'd be a good fit for the Angels
yeah
