The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded first baseman Adam LaRoche to the Boston Red Sox, SI.com has confirmed.
The Pirates acquired a pair of prospects -- Double-A shortstop Argenis Diaz and Class A right-handed pitcher Hunter Strickland -- in the deal.
LaRoche is only hitting .247 this season, but he was pacing the Pirates in home runs (12), RBIs (40) and runs (46). Eligible for free agency after the season, the 29-year-old is making $7.05 million in 2009.
The Red Sox could be worried about the health of third baseman Mike Lowell, who spent time on the disabled list earlier this month due to his ailing right hip. Boston could play LaRoche at first base and move Kevin Youkilis over to third.
The deal was first reported by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
