The Game: FIFA Soccer 09 (EA Sports)
The Systems: PS3, Xbox 360

Ah, the eternal question for all sports games: Do you make the video game more like the sport? Or, do you make the video game more like a video game? During a recent chat with gamer/Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling, he told us that he'd never make a baseball video game. Why? Because he'd want to make the game as hard as baseball is in real life. "And no one would want to play that game," he said.

Which brings us to FIFA Soccer 09. This game is slower this year, and much more realistic. But is that a good thing?

The answer: Yes, it is.

You'll need lots of patience to win games in FIFA Soccer 09. And you'll need to put in time practicing. Thanks to a greater effort on stats and strategy, this year's FIFA really forces you to get to know the strengths and weaknesses of your team. But when you play—and win—in FIFA Soccer 09, it's always because you've earned it.

First thing’s first: FIFA looked great last year. So how does it look this year? Graphically, the biggest difference you'll see in 09 is during player collisions. Whenever two players collide, the game doesn't just lapse into Collision Animation Number 92. Now, the collision appears natural, with momentum, weight, and speed all factored in. It may sound silly and small, but once you see it in action, you'll know exactly what we're talking about.

“Be A Pro” mode feels much more fleshed out this year. It makes your virtual four-season climb up from the reserve rankings to World Cup glory a much deeper and richer experience. If you're playing solo, this is likely where you'll spend most of your time.

Andy Gray and Martin Tyler do a superb job of providing the play-by-play. And, since we're on the subject of the soundtrack, all the major teams have their chants reproduced in the game.

Yet probably the most significant addition to this year's version is the inclusion of full-on 10 vs. 10 online play. That's right—you and nine friends with Net connections can finally field an entire soccer team together. And with the new Adidas Live Season, those with Net connections also get real-world updates of player and team stats.

Overall, this is by far the most complete FIFA title yet. EA Sports has overall done a terrific job this year. Just remember to bring a more realistic attitude when loading up the game, and you'll find plenty to admire. Recommended.
