Spring Training is a cool time of the year. In Florida, they call it the Grapefruit League. In Arizona, it's the Cactus League. The league is well-named since there are a lot of cactus here! I went to a game between the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics near the end of baseball’s preseason. It was a perfect day with not a cloud in the sky. I was able to get there early enough to watch batting practice. More »

The World Baseball Classic (WBC) was founded in 2005 and debuted in 2006 as a baseball version of the FIFA World Cup. Despite the existence of both Olympic Baseball and the Baseball World Cup when the WBC began (neither of which still exists), the WBC was able to survive and now is the world’s premier international baseball tournament.

February is black history month. This made me think about the impact that African-Americans have had on the sports world. One of the biggest impacts, in my opinion, was the Negro Leagues. In August 2011, I was lucky enough to go to Kansas City to see a Royals vs. Yankees game. What I did not know was the history of baseball in K.C. is more then just the Royals.

When the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted 18-year-old Clayton Kershaw with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, everyone knew the Dodgers were getting a great baseball player. He had gone 13-0 with a 0.77 ERA his senior year at Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas. Along with Tim Lincecum and Evan Longoria, Kershaw has been one of the stars of a strong draft class.

Sports and steroids seem to be going hand in hand these days. Just this past August two Major League Baseball players who were leading their teams to the playoffs tested positive for steroids and were suspended. A seven time Tour de France winner was stripped of all Tour de France titles and banned from cycling for life for allegedly using illegal performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). More »
