It’s been a while since I last checked in from China, but things have been pretty low key back home in Indiana. The new season is rapidly approaching, with training camp only one month away, I've been putting in some extra work to make sure that I will be ready when the time comes.
The China Trip was unbelievable. In Beijing, you really could tell that it was a cultural place with all the Chinese buildings, and it had a lot of history to it has well.
One of the first events we did as a group was walked the THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA!!! This wall was 4000 plus miles long and we only walked the first leg of it. My goodness it was a great workout for you legs, but tiring at the same time. The sight from the Great Wall was beautiful. We were taking pictures and people were taking pictures of us…lol!!!
After we walked the Wall, we all went to go get something to eat at a familiar place that looked good in our eyes.....Mc DONALDS…lol!! Hi Rise ordered an apple pie and they gave him a Mc Puff. The look on his face was priceless. I think he knew right then we were def. in China.
We just got to Shanghai Thursday afternoon after wrapping up a great couple days in Beijing. We had the opportunity to visit the BN Vocational School; it’s for children whose parents are migrant workers that leave them to work jobs in different parts of China. These children come from almost nothing, and the opportunity to succeed is usually not a part of their lives. The school takes these kids in and teaches them English, and vocational jobs, so that they can learn how be productive in society, and a lot of them are set up with internships in China and the U.S. after they graduate. It was really touching to see these kids and how positive and happy they were that we came to visit them; we wish them all the best and hope that they may fulfill all of their dreams.
We had the opportunity to go to the NBA China office and meet with the employees there and perform the Magic Circle and show them what the Globetrotters are all about. They all wanted more, but they’ll just have to wait for when we return in November! Dikembe Mutombo even dropped by while we were there and I think he gained a newfound respect for us after we told him how many games we play a year…LOL.
This is my first time in China, and it’s been awesome getting to see the scenery and interact with the people here. After a 13-hour flight from the States to Beijing, I met up with Hi Rise at the airport, and we went to the hotel to meet up with the rest of the players doing this promotional trip. It was nice to see Slick, Hi Rise, Handles, as well as Scooter, who I hadn’t seen since training camp last October. Friday afternoon we were allowed to just relax and catch up on some rest, because the next day we were going to the Great Wall for a photo shoot and to do some sightseeing.More »
Things have been pretty low key during the summer as far as tours and stuff, but we've been making sure we keep in touch with each other. Since all of us are around each other for so long, we kind of develop a brotherhood, so even when we're at home, we keep in contact as if we were on the road.
For the 4th of July, I spent time with my family, and we cooked out, laughed and just had a great time. It's always fun to have cookouts with loved ones and enjoy the summer. Summertime not only gives us a chance to spend time with our families and friends, but it also gives us all a chance to really develop new ball handling skills and other aspects to our games to make us better Globetrotters. I'm pretty sure all the guys are like me, in the gym every day working on new things and polishing up and perfecting our signature moves.
