The Super Bowl isn't the only thing to look forward to in early 2012. This January, a reboot of the NFL Blitz franchise will be available for download via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live ($14.99 and 1200 Microsoft Points respectively). Keep reading to find out more about this over-the-top game, including an awesome trailer!

So what exactly is Blitz? It's 7-on-7, hyperactive football action. Quarters are only two minutes long. Want a first down? You'll have to travel 30 yards instead of 10 yards. Penalties? Man, we don't need any stinking penalties. And finally, just like in NBA Jam, players eventually burst into flames (a.k.a. "He's on fire!").

All the top players from all 32 NFL teams will be rendered--for the first time since Blitz first debuted in arcades in 1997--in high definition glory. (The Sports Gamer is always a sucker for anything in high definition.)

Blitz Gauntlet mode is where players going solo will spend their time, fighting their way through a multi-tiered Gauntlet of NFL opponents, and battling against what EA is calling "fantasy character bosses."

Anyone looking to flaunt their Blitz skill against other players from around the world will have plenty of online modes to choose from, including Blitz Battles, full-on leader board functionality, and 2-on-2 co-op play. As if that's not enough, Tim "Boom-shak-a-lak-a" Kitzrow does play-by-play in the game, so expect plenty of hilarious catchphrases to be uttered.

We'll have more NFL Blitz info for you over the next few months. For now, enjoy the awesome action in the game's official trailer below:
