FIFA Soccer 11 for Wii is a great “pick up and play” family game, but it really isn’t a game for the hardcore soccer player.

A great feature of the game is its three different control types, as it makes the game more accessible to anyone who just wants to grab the game and play. If you’re the type who just wants to focus on the fundamentals, use the “all play” control, where the computer moves for you. If you prefer to do a little moving with the controller, attach the Wii nun chuck and it’s all yours. Or you can use the classic game cube controller for some good old-fashioned fun.

On the main screen, there are 4 different game modes to choose from: “Hit the Pitch,” which is a quick 11 vs. 11 game; “Hit the Streets,” which is 5 vs. 5; “Streets to Stadiums,” where you create a player and bring him all the way to the top of the soccer pole; and lastly “Battle for Glory,” where you can play and manage your team of choice. All of these game modes are really fun and each one gives the player a different perspective on the game of soccer. There is an online game mode, but, unfortunately, I had a hard time finding someone to play against and when I did, he/she usually left the game or opted out, usually due to connection reasons. Also, there were times when the game did not respond to my command to either pass or shoot in a certain direction, and this “glitch” could definitely prove to be an annoyance down the road.

As I mentioned above, this game is not for the hardcore player, as it is designed for Wii, a system which is usually geared toward the family-oriented gamers. The graphics also seemed to be incredibly bad, even for Wii. Of course, this doesn’t mean that some hardcore soccer players won’t play it, but upon doing so, some of their comments might include “this isn’t as realistic as I had hoped” or “it could have been much more in depth.”

Overall, FIFA 11 is a fun game for families to play, but if you’re looking for a hardcore soccer game, look elsewhere or consider one designed for another system.
