Things can always change in college football. That’s what makes it exciting and heartbreaking. Stanford fans are disappointed after the Cardinal’s loss to USC, and Baylor fans are thrilled that their team is now in the top 5.
The regular season is almost over, but there’s still plenty of time for changes. Get ready for a thrilling end to a great season!
Calvin Johnson is one of the best playmakers in the NFL, and he’s probably got the best nickname in the league, too: Megatron. The Detroit Lions’ star wide receiver is nicknamed after the Transfromers character, and thanks to Nike his connection with the Decepticon is getting a lot more real.
Nike and toy company Hasbro teamed up to create a sneaker and action figure collection based on Megatron — the robot and football player. The signature shoe, called the Nike CJ81 Megatron Trainer Max, is inspired by the Transformers character. It’s got a purple, red, and metallic silver color scheme, and includes the Decepticon logo on the heel. Its bold red swoosh and glossy purple finish will definitely make you the center of attention at the gym. Oh, and it parts of it glow in the dark to make you look even more robotic.
Yesterday, the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers pulled off a pretty big trade: Tigers slugger Prince Fielder for Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler (and some cash, according to Yahoo! MLB columnist Jeff Passan). We'll have to wait until April to see how good the deal is for both teams, but as SI.com writer Jay Jaffe reported, it's "a move that not only fills persistent holes for both teams but also clears roster logjams by opening spots for their respective top prospects."
It's also a move that was sorta-kinda predicted in 2010. This morning, the MLB Fan Cave dug up an old ESPN Sunday Night Baseball commercial that featured Fielder and Kinsler talking about trades. Check it out:
Week 11 was a pretty significant one for the 2013 NFL season. The Broncos beat the Chiefs, which means there are no more undefeated teams in the league. Carolina took down New England, and the Panthers are quickly becoming one of the league’s most dangerous teams. Denver overtook Kansas City for the top spot in the rankings, but that could change soon: The two teams play again on December 1.
With great upcoming matchups, including the second Denver-Kansas City game and New Orleans-Seattle on December 2, the rest of the season will show us which teams are truly elite.

New concussion alert technology is aimed at reducing injuries in young players
One of the biggest topics in football today is head injuries. And it’s become more important than ever to find ways to make the game safer. Solutions have ranged from stiffer penalties for head hits in the pro game to teaching safer tackling at the youth level.
But technology is playing an important role, too. Athletic equipment companies have worked to develop sensors and alert systems to track especially heavy hits and warn of possible head trauma. And in New York last month, the helmet manufacturer Riddell launched the latest entry in this growing field, the InSite Impact Response System.
“We need to clean up and change the game, improve it,” former Steelers quarterback and current ESPN analyst Merril Hoge said at the Riddell launch event, In the Film Room. “Here’s another tool. Here’s another opportunity.”
