Kenseth wins second Daytona 500

  • February 28, 2012, 10:55 AM

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- There was rain, fire, soap suds and fog in the most bizarre Daytona 500 in history.

When it was all over, Matt Kenseth was the only sure thing.

It wasn't even close.

Kenseth capped a crazy 36 hours for NASCAR by winning the first postponed Daytona 500 in 55 editions of the marquee event. He held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Roush Fenway Racing teammate Greg Biffle over a two-lap overtime finish in a race that was scheduled to begin Sunday afternoon but ended in the early morning hours Tuesday.

Bryant, West hold on to win NBA All-Star game

  • February 27, 2012, 11:14 AM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Kobe, KD and the West looked ready to deliver a quick KO.

Kevin Durant knew better.

"With all these great players on the floor, you never know what will happen," Durant said. "Guys making big shots, and they cut it down to one. We were up 18."

Just enough, it turned out, to hold off LeBron James and the East in the NBA All-Star game.

A bloodied Bryant scored 27 points, moving past Michael Jordan as the career scoring leader in the game, Durant had 36 in an MVP performance, and the Western Conference won 152-149 on Sunday night.

Griffin tops combine QBs in 40

  • February 27, 2012, 11:14 AM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Robert Griffin III proved he's the fastest quarterback at this year's NFL scouting combine.

It might not be enough to supplant Andrew Luck as the No. 1 pick.

The two finally got a chance to demonstrate their athleticism Sunday when workouts began.

Griffin showed his speed in the 40-yard dash, finishing officially in 4.41 seconds -- the best of any quarterback. He also clocked an unofficial time of 4.38, believed to be the first sub-4.4 by a QB since Michael Vick's 4.33 in 2001.

Source: Zimmerman, Nationals add $100 million, 6 years to contract

  • February 27, 2012, 11:12 AM

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ever since he became the Washington Nationals' very first draft pick, Ryan Zimmerman wanted to stay with the club for the long haul.

Now he'll get that wish.

The Nationals took what they hope is another step toward consistent contention by locking up their third baseman -- and the guy many still call the face of the franchise -- through 2019, adding six years to Zimmerman's existing contract in a deal announced Sunday.

Colts GM isn't ready to decide on Manning, Luck

  • February 24, 2012, 12:07 PM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Even the Indianapolis Colts don't have all the answers on Peyton Manning. Or Andrew Luck, for that matter.

New general manager Ryan Grigson said the Colts have not decided whether to release the four-time league MVP, whether to renegotiate with him or whether to take Luck with the No. 1 overall pick in April's draft.

Instead, things in Indianapolis are about as uncertain as the status of Manning's right arm.

Heat contain Lin, roll to 8th straight win, 102-88

  • February 24, 2012, 12:06 PM

MIAMI (AP) -- Jeremy Lin offered no excuses.

He and the Knicks had no answers.

Lin's rapid rise from unknown to superstar was slowed big-time Thursday night by the Miami Heat , who overwhelmed the NBA's hottest story with a swarming defense that the Knicks' new starting point guard could not solve.

Forcing Lin into easily the worst game of his remarkable run as New York's newest star, Miami topped the Knicks 102-88 - the eighth straight win for the NBA-leading Heat, all by at least 12 points.
