When the US hockey team hits the ice for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, it will be in some starry new sweaters. And the world got its first look at the new jerseys when they were unveiled at an event in Arlington, Virginia, earlier today.

The new uniforms were designed by Nike and are pretty different from the more simplistic versions worn in 2010. For the Vancouver Games, the Americans wore a solid jersey that simply had "USA" written across the front. This year, the team has a new crest — a shield that looks like it was taken out of a book on early 20th century American history (or the back of a new penny) — and a jersey with solid right and white bars at the top of the sleeves.

But check out the shoulders for the really wild part of this jersey: Stars. And printed-on laces. It looks a little weird for the laces to be printed rather than be real laces, but it's consistent with the design of other national team sweaters that will be worn in Sochi. Check out Team Russia's uni and compare it with Team USA's sweater:

The other neat part of the new Team USA sweater is that, on the inside collar, the years 1960 and 1980 are printed along with two gold dots. This is in recognition of the team's two hockey gold medals. Other jerseys will have "Land of the free, home of the brave" printed inside.
