Review: LittleBigPlanet Karting (PS3)

LittleBigPlanet was a game changer. Unlike most video games, which basically ask you to solve a formula to find success, LBP is a blank slate. The game is as good as you your mind makes it.

So obviously, I was really psyched to see LBP Karting. I mean, really, has there ever been a bad karting game?

Like with LittleBigPlanet, the coolest thing about LBP Karting is the customization and creativity you can use in building your kart and (much more exciting to me) building a customized track to race on. Just be warned, it does take some getting used to – I think the game needed more instructions and tutorials. Patience will pay off, but I think a lot of people will miss out on the coolest part of the game because they’ll give up before they get the hang of it.

As for the actual racing, it’s good. The steering is responsive. Drifting around corners to get that speed burst will take some practice to master. I really liked the challenge of spotting shortcuts. Maybe it’s just because the game was new to me, but I thought they were tucked away nicely. Spotting them is just challenging enough. Like with Mario Kart, I think the power-ups are weighed too heavily. Getting hit by one missile can ruin an otherwise flawless run.

There are other modes you can play, like a fun battle mode and treasure hunts. If you’re lucky enough to get LBP Karting, it will definitely keep you busy during December break.
