There’s No Crying in Basketball…or Is There? 35

Crying in sports has always been a touchy subject. So it’s no surprise that Miami coach Erik Spoelstra’s comments about Heat players in tears after the team’s loss to the Chicago Bulls last weekend created a firestorm, sparking the question: is it ok to boohoo in sports?

What is surprising is learning that Miami—a team struggling to finish games even with their big three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh—was reduced to tears after losing four straight games when their season isn’t even over yet. Adam Morrison’s season was over when UCLA overcame a 17-point deficit to knock off his No. 3 seed Gonzaga team in the 2006 NCAA tournament. The shaggy-haired forward dropped to the ground and sobbed as the final buzzer sounded. It was over for Roger Federer when his grand slam title hopes were dashed two year’s ago after losing to Rafael Nadal. Federer couldn’t contain himself as he watched Nadal accept the Australian Open trophy.

The Heat, Morrison and Federer were labeled crybabies after showing an emotion that is usually shunned in sports. But what if they shed those tears after a victory? Would crying then be acceptable? I am reminded of a sobbing Michael Jordan completely breaking down as he clutched his first NBA championship trophy with the Bulls in 1991. Landon Donovan was moved to tears after the U.S.’s win over Algeria in last year’s World Cup too. These examples are touching moments where victorious cries were allowed. Losing tears? Not so much.

Everyone reacts differently to wins and losses. Some cry, some don’t. But no matter the outcome of a game, it’s not right to knock athletes who get caught up in emotion. They are only human. I’m sure going forward, Miami has learned, perhaps, crying in private after a loss is the best way to avoid public backlash. But even so, I’m sure Heat players hope the next time they have to reach for a box of Kleenex, it’ll be after winning an NBA championship.

What do you think about crying in sports? It is ok or totally uncool? Let me know what you think in the comments below.

You don't cry in professional sports. I get it in tee-ball, but seriously, I mean, c'mon man! Don't be such a wimp when you lose. There's always another game.

only if you're a pro who gets paid to do it

I guess it's alright because everybody cries, even though you think their though.Everyone is different. So it's ok.

crying is fine if you broke a leg but not for losing

Its complicated if your crying cause you broke our leg, than that makes sence
if your crying like a baby because you fowled then thats dumb

All the talk about the Heat with Lebron, Wade, and Bosh and they aren't the #1 in the east!

the heat rock so does d-wade maybe they played so hard wanted to win so bad

If they rock then why do they keep losing even with the three "best" players. I say there's too many kings in the kingdom. Lebro nJames is a jerk, a showoff, and a baby (all of which a real king isn't), Dwayne Wade is a wannabe star, and Bosh just wants a ring. Oh, and Illgauskus, a true follower.

heats stink

I agree for 2 reasons. One is that I'm a Bulls fan, and two is that without LeBron James, the Caveliers stink, and with him and 2 other stars, and they are still not the best. That surprises me.

Crying is cool. But if you are a pro, and your crying like a baby, eventually the public is going to find out. That is just unmanly

I know!

you only lost four straight and your crying the cavs lost A LOT MORE than 4 and your crying

Guyz...wow. When u r supposed 2 be good and u lose 5 sraight it's frustrating and u feel hopeless. I can understand y they r crying.

Yeah, but if they're as good as evryone says, then why are they losing four straight? The Cavs lost a lot more and they didn't break down in tears. Championship material doesn't cry and act like a baby after a loss.

Hee Hee i'd give anything to see Erik Spoelstra cry like a baby. but come on man, you're a man, man up you big baby!

Exactly betrayed for wins, money and a ring, doesn't that just prove how much of a jerk he is? He had an hour special just to say "I'm leaving". The whole state of Ohio probably hates him!

dude come on dont be a jerk. i mean i am a blazers fan but think about it. put yourself in his shoes their suposed to be the best and now they are loosing loosing loosing. look at what lebron did. he betrade his own team to win( and 4 the money) and be the best

well he shouldnt cry keep your emotions to yourself

Don't be a crybaby your a man so man up.

Remember Mark Ingram's cry of joy?

WELL,,,,,,,, I THINK THAT YOU KNOW ITS MORE OF THEIR JOB, SO IF PLAYERS START GETTING IN2 A SLUMP THEY MIGHT BE THINKING ABOUT THEM NOT GETTING SIGNED BY ANY TEAM, AND HAVE TO GET A NEW JOB. CRYING WHEN YOU WON IS SO MUCH MORE DIFFERENT B/C THIS IS LIKE THEIR DREAM AND THEY HAVE A REASON T CRY. OF COURSE ITS NOT SAD CRYING. :)

how do u level up on this game

Yeah, you guys should add an FAQ to this thing.(if you do have one, my bad, I haven't seen it.) What do levels even mean?

I agree completly. Every one is human and will have their emotions overcome them, but ripping on them for this is not okay. I also feel that they should keep their emotions to themselves as best they can, though.

I think you should not cry in sports. The only time when you should cry is when you win.

I don't think there's anything wrong with crying when you win. I mean, it's the dream that every sports player has, and some never accomplish it. Crying when you lose is SOOOOOOOO not cool though.

NO u should never cry in sports. i mean u got 2 be a man. big fat babys dont get picked to make it into the big leages, men do. come on dude man up.

Hey celtics lost 2 games in a row they arent crying and thats go IHS highschool kuz there in states for basketball go 33

They don't need another star, they have too many, that's the problem, both James and Wade are showy ball hogs. Watch get rid of one or the other , champ team.
