Pennant Race Report: August 12 22

I went to the dentist this morning. He said that my teeth looked amazing. He also said that I was doing a good job flossing. Flossing of course is important because even though your teeth are close together, plaque can get into even the tiniest spaces. What does this have to do with baseball? Well, some of the division races are so close it will take dental floss to separate the winners and the loses. Here’s the skinny on how the playoff contenders are looking this week.

AL East
After calling the Rays the class of this division they went and let the Yankees take the lead back. I still think the Yankees and Rays will get the Division and the Wild Card, but now I have to give the edge to the defending champs who split two tough series against Boston and Texas this week. The Red Sox aren’t out of it, but I just don’t think they’ll put it all together soon enough to take out one of these teams.

AL Central
Things are all knotted up in the Central where the Twins and White Sox have identical records. We could be headed for ANOTHER one-game divisional playoff if things stay this even. These two teams play each other tonight though, so at least one team will have an edge heading into the weekend. Still, I have no idea what to think here. It seems like every week one team plays great and one team tanks.

NL East
The Braves are 7-3 in their last 10 games, but they found out today that Chipper Jones will miss the rest of the season. So, it remains to be seen if they rally together without their longtime leader or wilt without him in the lineup. The Phillies are the last team I’d want breathing down my neck, especially since Chase Utley is on his way back from his injury. I still think the Braves can win out, but I don’t think Philly will make it easy.

NL Central
Well, Brandon Phillips went and insulted the Cardinals and then watched his team roll over in a three-game sweep. My gut tells me that this is a turning point in the Central and that St. Louis is going to turn their one game lead into a bigger cushion. They’re playing great baseball right now while Cincinnati is desperate for a win.

NL West
This is slowly turning into a battle of the Sans. The San Diego Padres keep on trucking but San Francisco just added Mike Fontenot and are just 2.5 games out. These two teams have similar profiles, solid pitching and surprisingly productive offenses. I think the Padres are still the better team but I like the pieces the Giants have added and I’d love to see what Tim Lincecum could do in the playoffs.

Well that took a while.....

Reply If u think this is crazy!!!!

Go Dodgers!!!!! I doubt they are going to make the playoffs though. It's a bummer.

GO BRAVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

go cards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the series finale Vs. Boston the Jays won 6-5. They were down by four runs going into the bottom of the ninth. Papelbon has posted a sparkling 0.75 ERA against the Jays over 6 years. History was changed tonight when Papelbon allowed four runs and ended up with the loss. The winning pitcher was Kevin Gregg.

GO DEREK JETER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Pads are gonna take the west because of the addition of Miguel Tejada.

Twins win the Div. NO 1 game play-off. And Brain I know your good with alergies so I've been getting a caugh at n ite and the rest of the day i'm fine what should I do?

ha ha ha!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude my cat kinda looks like that. HAHA

You are totally right we whooped their butts and brandon phillips go`s out and says he hates the Cardinals when half his team are cardinals JIm edmonds, Scott rolen, and Miguel Cairo who i still have a little love in my heart for them. But Yadier Molina after brandon phillips started the fight with by saying to yadier whats up dawg. But then Yadier one of my favorite players says the best comeback. I am not your dawg. But then even better yadier hits a home run his first at bat. Take that Brandon Phillips and some of the reds who i don't have any love for at all. Oh and one more thing Johnny Cueto is a baby. Getting backed up against the wall then kicking his way out. Oh my gosh. Chris Carpenter is actually tough and he shoved his way off the wall. GO CARDINALS. Reds remember that name. CARDINALS

I LIKE TO SEE,LETS SEE JOHNNY CUETO KICK CARDINALS PLAYERS THAT IS FUNNY.THE REDS ARE GONNA PULL OUT.AS OF AUG.15 THE REDS AND CARDS ARE TIED!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! you are right there were no Cardinals when Johnny Cueto was kicking

not after todays game the Red socks wont get it together but the jays will

At least it's not the Reds and Cardinals division. I mean they had to get in a fight to settle something. Not only that ut they have been rivals for ever. In the AL central, It's a 3 way race. White Sox, Twins, and Tigers. Going back to the cardinals and reds fight.... I must agree with crucsher jet. It shows a lack of sportsmanship on his part, insisting on talking smack about another team. In my view, they aren't that bad counting they are 1.5 in front. I understand it's only because they are batteling for a playoff spot. Realisticly, both of them are most likely going to make the playoffs. What i did like about it is it shows the post season intensity. they know the fight is narrowing down and they will stop at absolutely nothing to win that division. Unfortunately, my team is most likely going to finish bad (dodgers) but i'm still watching. I think the two teams i will root for in post season is reds (if they hold on) and the rays. anyone agree on anything i said???? if so, please tell in a calm and lively manner.

thanks both of you for complementing. and big blue, i only said the rays because i am overwhelmed by the fact that they have been doing so well since 2008. Also, I know for a fact the yankees are going to make the playoffs and i like a couple guys but when one superstar on a team confesses that he has cheated ( A Rod) i lose respect for the team. I even lost respect for the dodgers when manny got caught using performance enhancers. if i had to choose my favorite players from the yankees.... they would probably be Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter. they both play the game fair..... and thats the way it should be played. speaking of which, I know this will sound obvious to those who read this column. but baseball... lets not forget... is our nations past time. A sport where talent meets a whole new level. If you go back to the old days.. Don larson, stan musial, sandy koufax, willie mccovey, willie mays... they played with the talent they were born with. they played with an incredible amount of intensity and never showed mercy on what they had to do. Now you see guys being paid millions of bucks to go there and perform well. some guys dont even perform well. they just play. You look at soon to be super stars.. like Matt Kemp. the guy has all the talent a guy could ever dream of having. and yet, he puts it to waste by not focusing and getting thrown out on the base paths. Its so sad to see guys play........just for the money. i assure you, when wille mays played center field, he was playing with every ounce of intensity he had and would do what ever he could do, to stop a double from being a triple or even maybe a home run. if you have anything to add to this please do so. and say if you agree or not. thhanks!

I agree about wanting to watch the reds in the postseason but not the rays!I would want to watch the YANKEES!!!!!!!REMEMBER THE NAME FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes yes i do. But just for your information the Braves are going to kick the Dodgers BUTTS!

Brandon Phillips had no place to talk about my Cardinals like that.
Haha Brandon!
Cardinals sweep!!

YES HE DOES HES STANDING UP FOR HIS TEAM!THIS IS REDS COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES HE DOES HES STANDING UP FOR HIS TEAM!THIS IS REDS COUNTRY!!!!!!!!!!!!
