Death to the Draw! 13

Count me amongst the many people who have come down with a severe case of World Cup fever. I’ve been watching every minute of footy action since last Friday’s kickoff game between host South Africa and Mexico. And yet as intense as the action has been so far, the opener underscored my biggest beef with the World Cup…

The tie game.

This is sports! When the game is over, there is a winner and a loser. And yet here we are, watching what many hail as the biggest sporting event in the universe, and half of the games I’m watching don’t crown a winner. There have already been six ties since the Cup started!

I know that once we get past Group Play tie games go out the window, but why can’t we have penalty kicks for all World Cup games? Soccer fans wait four years for every World Cup, the least you can do is give them a winner in each game.

I personally think the best solution would be penalty kicks immediately following regulation of any game in Group Play. By skipping overtime in the first three games, players wouldn’t have to exert too much more energy and the fans would be able to judge a winner and a loser.

We’d also have a more accurate way of advancing teams into the Round of 16. Right now, a win is worth three points, while a tie is worth one. With all of the ties so far, all of the teams are grouped so tightly that goal differential plays way too big of a role in advancing teams to the next round. Germany already has a +4 goal differential thanks to their blowout of Australia, which means they could tie the rest of their games and still coast into the Round of 16.

Heading into Father’s Day weekend, I feel like a dad who keeps getting the same tie every year before tossing it in the back of the closet. NO! MORE! TIES!

What do you think soccer fans, am I being too harsh on the rules of soccer? Or do I have a point and you think the World Cup should consider changing its rules? Let me know in the comments!

HA THATS FUUNY

Hi

it is not fair to have one winner because everyone is a winner if they couldn't score during the game then too bad its not fair to go to shoot outs. In regular soccer games there are ties.

Guys, once we get into the knockout rounds then we'll have soccer's version of overtime, extra time. They have 20" halves and if it's still tied they go into Penalties and that will decide the winner. They only do this when you need a winner like in a super knockout round (when they only play one game for round of 16 to Finals which is what the world cup uses)or a championship or a tie in aggregate. In group stages they just stop at a tie. But they do use a points system in the groups but they also track every other aspect of the game. That's how they get out of the group. Also 2 teams get out of 1 group of 4 so they will already know that if there's a tie for first they know that both teams will still go to RO16.

it would be cool if every time a game was tied at the end they would have a shoot out

I just finished a world cup bracket on ESPN, I have Brazil winning it all. USA was lucky to tie, Spain lost to SWITZERLAND, and brazil is in my opinion the most talented team on earth.

Just like everyone else. I want defending champs Italy.

I know they tied, but i really wanted to see portugal win. I'm a fan but i have nothing to do with them. still, I don't like how they only have stoppage and regulation time. there really sould be overtime.

KEEP THE TIE! For some countries [ New Zealand ] a tie is a huge victory, while for others [ Brazil ] a humbling defeat. Ties a needed part of the game!!!

If there is a draw in a soccer game, there should be a 15-minute overtime. If still tied, there should be a shootout. They will keep shooting penalty kicks until one team scores.(Note: If team scores first penalty kick of shootout, the other team will have a chance to tie. If successful, scoring tries will continue until score. If unsuccessful, the team who scored first wins the match.)

i know but wouldn't that get kind of teidous?
