NFL Power Rankings: Week 15

Ho, ho, ho. Merry Christmas! Is Santa bringing your team a playoff spot? I know that as a Bears fan, all I got was Jay Cutler and a lump of coal in my stocking. Let’s see where everyone landed after a busy Week 15. (And as always, submit your own power rankings and compare them to mine with our Power Rankings Builder!)

NFL Power Rankings
1 Indianapolis Colts
Last Week: 2
And we have a new #1! The Colts surprised everyone by keeping their starters in for the entire meaningless game in Week 15. Peyton pulled off another miraculous comeback and now we’re only two weeks away from a second undefeated regular season in the last three years.
2 San Diego Chargers
Last Week: 3
This has been a powerful season for the NFL’s elite. How powerful? The Chargers have reeled off nine straight wins and still own only the third longest winning streak of the season.
3 New Orleans Saints
Last Week: 1
And the mighty finally fall. Not only did the Saints lose their first game, Drew Brees had his first bad game. Now the pressure is on in New Orleans to respond to a tough loss and bounce back and still secure homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.
4 Philadelphia Eagles
Last Week: 6
DeSean Jackson is quickly moving his name up the list of most explosive receivers in the NFL. He leads the league in yards per catch and is second in catches of 25 yards or more.
5 Minnesota Vikings
Last Week: 4
Brett Favre is bickering with his coach over playing time in the middle of the stretch run. comes the drama.
6 Dallas Cowboys
Last Week: 14
Dallas’ up-and-down season continues and this week, they are most certainly way up after handing the Saints their first loss of the season. The big win doesn’t stand for very much, however, if the ‘Boys can’t maintain their momentum with a Week 16 win over the stumbling Redskins.
7 New England Patriots
Last Week: 8
It wasn’t pretty, but division wins are never easy to come by. Next up, the real test: back-to-back games against teams fighting for their playoff lives.
8 Cincinnati Bengals
Last Week: 7
That was one tough week for the Bengals, who had to deal with the loss of Chris Hnery leading up to a road game against the Chargers. Cincy put up a good fight on the road, though, which makes me think they’ll be able to bounce back at home against the Chiefs in Week 16.
9 Green Bay Packers
Last Week: 5
The Packers secondary hadn’t given up a 300 yard passing game all season until Week 15, when they let Big Ben throw for over 500 yards. Packers fans better hope that’s just a fluke if they want to continue the team’s payoff push.
10 Baltimore Ravens
Last Week: 11
Ray Rice and the Ravens running game continues to fuel Baltimore. The Ravens have only lost once in nine games this season while accumulating more than 100 yards on the ground.
11 Arizona Cardinals
Last Week: 10
Barely scraping out a win against the Detroit Lions’ second string roster is not something to be proud of. When the Cards are good, they can run with anyone in the NFL, but when they’re bad, it gets ugly.
12 Denver Broncos
Last Week: 9
The slide continues as the Broncos have lost six of their last eight. With a trip to Philly looming in Week 16, it’s not guaranteed that Denver will be playing in the post-season anymore.
13 Tennessee Titans
Last Week: 13
The Titans have made the long climb from 0-6 to 7-7. Now their eyes will be fixed on scoreboards the next two weeks, as they need a lot of help to sneak into the playoffs.
14 New York Giants
Last Week: 17
The G-Men’s defense rose to the occasion in a must-win game, delivering five sacks and three interceptions.
15 Miami Dolphins
Last Week: 12
Ricky Williams just pulled off his first 1,000 yard rushing season in six years. The six-year gap between milestones is the longest in NFL history.
16 Houston Texans
Last Week: 20
Forget Reggie Wayne, Randy Moss and all those guys in New Orleans, Andre Johnson continues to put up monster numbers. Johnson has over 200 more receiving yards than the second best wideout in the game this season.
17 Pittsburgh Steelers
Last Week: 21
Big Ben re-enacted his Super Bowl winning pitch and catch to save Pittsburgh’s season. With new life, I’ll be curious to see how the Steelers close out 2009.
18 Jacksonville Jaguars
Last Week: 16
Three losses in their last four games have pretty much knocked the Jags out of the playoff chase.
19 Carolina Panthers
Last Week: 22
In a lost season, knocking off the Vikings on national TV might just be the highlight for the Panthers.
20 Atlanta Falcons
Last Week: 19
Kudos to the Falcons for gutting out a win in Week 15 even though they’re eliminated from the playoff picture.
21 New York Jets
Last Week: 15
Gang Green went 33 defensive possessions without allowing a touchdown. Too bad the streak ended with Atlanta’s game-winning TD strike in Week 15. Now the Jets are on life support in the AFC wild card race.
22 San Francisco 49ers
Last Week: 18
Alex Smith’s turnover issues continue to plague this team, as he’s thrown five picks in his last two games.
23 Oakland Raiders
Last Week: 26
When you play Charlie Frye, J.P. Losman AND JaMarcus Russell, all in the same game, and win? Well, that is one impressive feat.
24 Buffalo Bills
Last Week: 24
104 penalty yards is a lot…especially for the first half. The Bills set the dubious high mark for the season in their Week 15 loss to the Pats.
25 Washington Redskins
Last Week: 23
When you have no points on the board, going for a fake field goal to close out the half is a questionable decision. But when you make the same call coming out of a timeout after the other team has already seen your formation? That’s absolutely insane.
26 Cleveland Browns
Last Week: 29
Don’t look now, but the Browns are on a two-game winning streak. Special congrats go out to Jerome Harrison, whose 286 yard rushing day was the third best in NFL history.
27 Chicago Bears
Last Week: 27
It’s a lost season for the Bears, who started out a promising 3-1 before dropping eight of their next ten games. Chicago can try to salvage some pride with an upset over the Vikings this coming Monday night, but that’s about it for 2009.
28 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Last Week: 30
Josh Freeman finally tossed some touchdown passes – his two TDs in Week 15 were the first he’s thrown in three weeks – to help the Bucs get win number two.
29 Seattle Seahawks
Last Week: 25
The one thing the Hawks have done well this year is protect their homefield. Well, you can throw that out the window now, too, as Seattle handed the Bucs just their second win of the season in Week 15.
30 Detroit Lions
Last Week: 32
With Drew Stanton and Daunte Culpepper swapping in and out of the Lions line-up, it’s clear the QB position is in disarray without Matthew Stafford. The Lions need a full healthy season from Stafford in 2010 to see whether he can be their long-term solution under center.
31 Kansas City Chiefs
Last Week: 28
It’s been a long season for the Chiefs defense, and Week 15 just made it longer. KC’s 31st ranked defense gave up the third best single-game rushing performance in NFL history.
32 St. Louis Rams
Last Week: 31
The toothless Rams defense has failed to notch a sack or an interception in two full games. Sorry St. Louis, back to the bottom for you…

romo sinks

I am so excited for week seventeen. now it's crunch time. one game i really want to watch is going to be the bengals/jets game. bengals are already in the playoffs but the jets aren't. a HUGE must win for the jets to clinch wild-card.what an awesome playoff race this year!

You know why the Colts are 14-0? They have good starters! First off they have an amazing QB Paton Manning nobody can stop him, plus they have good recivers like Dallas Clark and Hank Baskett ( I'm a huge Eagles fan!).
On defence they got Dwight Freeney on the line to sack they opposing QB and some other players to. But the real manner is that the Colts might go to the Super Bowel!

I toatally agree with you that is so true!

" you're joking right? Did you not watch the game against the jets? ya ya ya good point on how the colts have super bowl starters. answer these then.

1- is peyton manning really unstopable? to me, the jets and patriots didn't think that.

2- why the heck did the colts pull out peyton in the third???

3- sure sure sure, it's all about the colts. manning, addai, all those other guys. whatever. colts will choke in playoffs. patriots all the way.

CASE CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can not belive the colts rested the starters

go colts

In the AFC the steelers and the broncos should get the wild card spots and for NFC it's the cowboys+packers. Then,I think the Colts will win the super bowl[colts Fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!].

colts numba 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

vikings should be atleast #1

hey panther striker. lets get something straight. you said, the vikes have "farve". was it supposed to make it sound like the vikes stink? he may be old, but still perhaps one of the best if not GREATEST qb's of all time. and silver cadillac, im a pats fan, but i do agree. they are a terific football team. going back, panther. i would assume that you're a fan of a below average team. so why even rat out the vikings when you know that with farve, peterson and pretty much the rest of the team, is winning games? respond if u have a chance.

vikings stink having brett farve (i think i spelled it right?)

"At least"??? How about "should be"???

Colts deserve to be #1

The Saints lost to the Bucs how do you lose to the TB bucaneers they now have i think 2 wins

who wants to see what professor ulane said in power ranking's week 1?
ok, i hear distant "meeeee"s so i will continue:

New Orleans Saints (1-0)
Drew Brees and company are clearly on a mission to prove that you can win a Super Bowl title with offense. While I don’t think it will happen, I sure am looking forward to watching them try.

i am a pats fan, but seeing that makes me kinda wowed.

Lesson learned:
1. don't judge a book by it's cover
2. it's not over till its over
3. do not jump to conclusions in the nfl early. its still a loooooon way til the season's over.

I'm a Colts fan...and I agree, it's not over 'til it's over.

serves rams right 4 realisin dante hall

from dante hall fan (few last year)

hey, everybody were from calmar alberta canada and we live on a dairy farm. does anyboy else live on a dairy farm? have a good year.

I'm glad you ranked the Panthers at 19 because even though I am a Panthers fan I ranked them 22.

(som info before you read this: i am from NC and i like the pats)
why did you rank them that low? they beat the VIKINGS when they used to be playing horrible! (all because of their old qb...sad days) i also like the panthers, 2nd best. :D

I'm a panthers fan 2

Merry day after x-mas everyone! The mighty Titans fell out of the playoff race. Well, if you think you can make it to January going o-6 then mounting a comeback with the Chargers and Colts in your way, they never really had a chance. But I'm gonna have to say good luck to Chris Johnson to get 2,000 next week. Back to the playoffs(AFC), I think the Ravens will stay, and the Texans will bump off the Broncos. If I am correct, the Ravens will beat the Texans and the Pats will beat Cincy in the Wild Card round. Then the Colts would beat the Ravens and the Chargers would beat the Pats. Then it's kind of a tossup, Colts have lost to the Chargers 4 times out of the last five. But barely beat them in the playoffs. And now the Colts have a good idea of the Chargers defense and offense. Plus I like Jim Caldwell's play choice, he blitz's more often and goes for it on fourth down more. So I'll say a slim 4th quarter comeback Colts win. Soon I will explain the NFC playoff situation. What do ya think Wiz?

I am a Pittsburgh fan, but indy is gonna win the Super Bowl

IF YOUR A PITTSBURG FAN, GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BUT STAY A PITTSBURG FAN. THEY'RE LITTERLY #1.

WHOA WHOA WHOA. Hang on buddy. base what you said on past expeirences alright? In the playoffs, for two times in a row, the colts were the best.they should have won it like four years in a row. but, it seems that every team that has a shot at playoffs, has given the colts a hard time. (patriots, jets, bengals, etc.)AND, if they play chargers in first round, there a possibility the chargers will win. i may be wrong, but the colts have a very slim chance of winning Mr. Lombardi's property. (Lombardi trophy)

Mary Christmas everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Merry Christmas Mascot Nation!!!!!
I am using my new laptop!!! Love it!!!
