Last Week: 1
New Orleans Saints (9-0)
I refuse to drop the Saints until they lose. Still, the team’s Week 10 scare helped highlight their biggest weakness: they can’t stop the run. The Rams became the fourth straight team to top 135 rushing yards against the Saints. I’d like to see the Saints trounce Tampa Bay in Week 11 to show they’re not getting too fat and happy with their undefeated status. |
Last Week: 2
Indianapolis Colts (9-0)
Peyton Manning is the Colts MVP, but they might want to give some credit to Bill Belichick for that wild Week 10 win. Now that the most hyped game of the season is over, the Colts face a mean test in the next month. Back-to-back trips to Baltimore and Houston before a trip home to face the rejuvenated Titans. |
Last Week: 3
Minnesota Vikings (8-1)
Just like the other top teams, Minny looked sluggish during their Week 10 win over an inferior opponent. Still, there’s nothing sluggish about the Vikings offense, which already boasts Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin and Brett Favre – and just added another big-play threat in Sidney Rice. Rice led all NFL receivers in Week 10 with 201 yards through the air. |
Last Week: 6
Cincinnati Bengals (7-2)
The injury to Cedric Benson dampens the excitement that comes from sweeping the Steelers for the first time in over 10 years. Still, with rumors of Larry Johnson signing with the team, Cincy should be able to hold up until Benson returns to his workhorse form, especially if the defense keeps shutting down opposing offenses (2nd in points allowed, 2nd in rushing yards allowed). |
Last Week: 4
Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3)
Bad news in Week 10 for the defending champs. First Troy Polamalu goes down with his second knee injury of the season, then they get swept by division rival Cincy. The Steelers banged up D should be able to heal up against the Chiefs before their first battle with the Ravens in Week 12. |
Last Week: 11
San Diego Chargers (6-3)
LaDainian Tomlinson exploded for two touchdowns, putting him third all-time on the NFL’s career touchdown list. More importantly, the Chargers win locked San Diego into a tie with the struggling Broncos heading into their second meeting of the season in Week 11. |
Last Week: 5
New England Patriots (6-3)
It’s very hard to say that a football game came down to one play, but it certainly seemed that way in the Patriots devastating loss to the Colts. Bill Belichick’s fourth down gamble didn’t just lead to a loss in Week 10, it might’ve also knocked the Pats out of the race for homefield advantage in the playoffs this year. |
Last Week: 9
Arizona Cardinals (6-3)
The Cards are flashing some signs of being the high-powered team that streaked to the Super Bowl last season…with a nice little addition. Beanie Wells has busted out for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the last two weeks to help boost the Cardinals sad running game. |
Last Week: 14
Baltimore Ravens (5-4)
Baltimore is 2-4 against teams with winning records and 3-0 against teams with losing records. They might want to start correcting that trend with Indy and Pittsburgh coming to town in the next two weeks. |
Last Week: 19
Green Bay Packers (5-4)
Aaron Rodgers usually gets the headlines in Green Bay, but Week 10 belonged to Charles Woodson. Woodson forced two fumbles and made the interception that sealed the Packers upset win over the Cowboys in the fourth quarter. |
Last Week: 13
Houston Texans (5-4)
A bye week for the Texans results in a boost in the rankings. No offense, Texans, but that has more to do with how many stinkbombs were dropped in Week 10. Still, the talent is here for the franchise’s first ever playoff run, which starts off with a tough back-to-back: surging Tennessee in Week 11, then the undefeated Colts in Week 12. |
Last Week: 7
Dallas Cowboys (6-3)
The Cowboys looked terrible in Green Bay in Week 10, now they have to face an even uglier truth: injuries are starting to tear apart the depth chart. Tackle Marc Colombo could be out for the season, safety Ken Hamlin will miss about a month, and two more offensive linemen are sporting ankle sprains. The ‘Boys will try to get healthy against Washington and Oakland in the next two weeks. |
Last Week: 13
Philadelphia Eagles (5-4)
When you keep this team out of the end zone, they’re going to have a tough time beating you. While the explosive Eagles offense averages over 34 points per game in their wins, they only have five touchdowns TOTAL in their four losses. |
Last Week: 17
Jacksonville Jaguars (5-4)
Two more winnable games for these quickly improving Jags (at home against Buffalo, at San Francisco) lead up to a huge game against the Texans in Week 13 full of AFC Wild Card implications. |
Last Week: 8
Atlanta Falcons (5-4)
The ankle injury to the revived Michael Turner is bad (he had already eclipsed 100 yards on just nine carries before he was forced out of his Week 10 game). The play of Matt Ryan is worse. Ryan had his sixth straight game with at least one interception on Sunday as the Falcons have lost three out of their last four. |
Last Week: 20
Carolina Panthers (4-5)
Don’t look now, but the Panthers are rounding into form. Jake Delhomme hasn’t thrown an interception in three weeks and the running game is third in the league. Yet just as they get hot, more adversity strikes. The Panthers have lost left tackle Jordan Gross for the rest of the season with a broken ankle. |
Last Week: 15
Miami Dolphins (4-5)
I love the Dolphins fourth ranked rushing attack and I love that they finally have a quarterback like Chad Henne who can stretch the field. I just think they have too much of an uphill climb to make the playoffs. Starting in Week 13, the fish play four winning teams and the Titans to close out the season. |
Last Week: 16
New York Giants (5-4)
Even after a monthlong losing streak, the Giants are still right in the thick of the NFC East race. I’m interested to see how they bounce back after a week off to re-group. |
Last Week: 10
Denver Broncos (6-3)
Uh-oh. Losses to the Ravens and Steelers are excusable…but the Redskins?! No one knows if Kyle Orton will be ready for this week’s battle for first against the Chargers, but it might not matter if the defense continues to falter. Broncos opponents have averaged over 28 points per game during their three-game losing streak. |
Last Week: 22
Tennessee Titans (3-6)
Chris Johnson is no doubt the MVP of this team (and maybe even the league) but Vince Young has also helped turn this team around against a trio of sub.500 teams. Since he took over the starting job, VY has led the Titans to three straight wins with a 71 percent completion percentage and a 99.3 QB rating. Can he keep it up against his next three much tougher opponents (Houston, Arizona, Indy)? |
Last Week: 18
New York Jets (4-5)
Remember when the Jets were 3-0? Yeah, I don’t either. Since that point, the Jets have lost five of six games while playing sloppy football (14 turnovers). |
Last Week: 25
San Francisco 49ers (4-5)
A win is a win, but I wouldn’t be printing up playoff tickets in San Francisco just yet. The Niners picked off Jay Cutler five times and still just barely squeaked out a win. |
Last Week: 21
Seattle Seahawks (3-6)
Head coach Jim Mora is getting testy as Seattle falls out of the playoff race. The coach sent 17 plays to the NFL officials office for review this week in response to what he feels is unfair treatment from the officials. |
Last Week: 26
Washington Redskins (3-6)
While toppling the Broncos was a huge win for the Redskins, I’m not sure it’s a turning point. Week 10 was the first time ALL SEASON that Washington scored more than 17 points in a game. |
Last Week: 23
Chicago Bears (4-5)
Fair or not, Jay Cutler is going to get all the blame for this disastrous Bears season. It’s not fair, because his offensive line is not giving him any time to throw. It is fair, because he leads the league in interceptions. Even without protection, you can’t throw away as many balls as Cutler has this season and expect to win. |
Last Week: 24
Buffalo Bills (3-6)
Dick Jauron’s mid-season firing is sad, so let’s focus on the positive. Jairus Byrd leads the league in interceptions and should lock down the Defensive Rookie of the Year award this season. |
Last Week: 30
Kansas City Chiefs (2-7)
Hail to the Chiefs, who notched their second win of the season behind strong running from Jamaal Charles. It was Charles first 100-yard game of the season and proved that the Chiefs are ready to move on without Larry Johnson. |
Last Week: 29
St. Louis Rams (1-8)
You gotta feel for Rams fans. Not only does their team have only one win this year, but they haven’t won a home game since last October. |
Last Week: 27
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-8)
I think we all know what Week 10’s loss means for Tampa Bay. They must return to the creamsicle orange jerseys. So far this season, the Bucs are 0-8 in their current uniforms and 1-0 in their neon orange throwbacks. |
Last Week: 31
Detroit Lions (1-8)
Matthew Stafford has had a rough go at it in his rookie season, but it doesn’t help that he’s constantly being harassed by opposing defenses. Detroit is giving up over three sacks a game this season. |
Last Week: 28
Oakland Raiders (2-7)
JaMarcus Russell has the same number of benchings as he does wins this year. That’s not exactly the formula for Super Bowl success. |
Last Week: 32
Cleveland Browns (1-8)
When you’ve been held scoreless in six out of the nine games you’ve played this season…well, yeah, you stay at the bottom of the rankings. |
