What to Watch: Weekend Baseball

The only way baseball can compete with the start of football season is to offer the kind of games that you can’t ignore, and that’s exactly what is on the slate this weekend.

Six teams, all with playoff aspirations, meet up in three can’t-miss series. The only tough part was picking which game to watch each day…

Friday: Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins
The Tigers lead the Twins by just 4.5 games and have to face them seven more times this season. With rookie phenom Rick Porcello on the mound, Detroit has a good shot. But the Twinkies have been hot and facing Joe Mauer is no easy task. In a weekend full of great match-ups, this series should be the best.

Saturday: San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers
Just a few weeks ago Brad Penny was getting sacked by the Red Sox and Jon Garland was wasting away in Arizona. Now they find themselves on two of the top teams in the NL. Penny beat his former team once already, but he may run into more trouble in Chavez Ravine, where he’ll have to deal with fans who don’t like seeing one of their own in a rival jersey.

Sunday: Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers
This is the third series of the weekend that pits two teams who are competing for one playoff spot. The Rangers are still in the picture, but the Angels can pretty much shut the door on them with a series win. Lackey is 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA against Texas this season, so don’t expect the Rangers to go down without a fight.
