It's hockey week all over the world--well, mostly in Canada--as the annual installments of EA’s NHL
and 2K’s NHL 2K
series hit stores. As I've discussed at length in this month's issue of the magazine, both games are great this year on the Xbox 360 and PS3. But what if you're a hockey fan and you only own a Wii?
Wii owners only have one choice for a puck sim this year, and that's NHL 2K10. Now before you start crying into your Cheerios, here's the good news: NHL 2K10 is awesome on the 360 and PS3…and it's even more awesome on the Wii!
This year you've got a new franchise mode, full online play, and gameplay improvements like stick-lifts and stumble shots--in other words, you've got everything the 360 and PS3 versions have--plus you get Wii-exclusive multiplayer modes. Put your Miis on the ice--up to four people can play simultaneously--and go head-to-head in a bunch of mini-games that are designed to mimic the NHL All-Star Skills Competition. Who can hit the hardest shot? Who's the fastest skater? Who's the most accurate shooter? You'll find your answers in the game.
There's also a neat Breakaway Challenge and a Goalie Supersave mini-game that are big hits around the Sports Gamer office. Plus, this year's version supports Wii MotionPlus--the new plug-in gadget for the Wii Remote--and Wii Speak support, so you can chat with your friends during games.
At long last, Wii owners no longer have to hang their heads in shame with lesser versions of sports games. This is a must-own for any Wii-owner/hockey fan out there.
