Jeff Kinney introduced Greg Heffley to the world in 2007 with the first book in his series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The book immediately ran up the charts to become a New York Times bestseller. This year, Kinney published the third and fourth books in the wildly successful series to the delight of both kids and parents. The author and cartoonist models the main character and his hilarious exploits after his own life and plans to write at least one more book for the series.
Much like his creator, Greg Heffley is an average kid. He’s not particularly popular and he’s not the star of the football team. Kinney’s goal was to write about a character that kids could relate to. His popular books will debut on the big screen in 2010.
Kinney was born in 1971 and grew up in Maryland. Though he drew a popular comic strip for his college newspaper, he abandoned his dreams of becoming a cartoonist after several rejections. Before he started the Wimpy Kid series, Kinney worked for the Family Education Network, which creates websites for children.
For his entertaining and understanding perspective on what it’s like to be a kid, Jeff Kinney is a nominee for TFK Person of the Year 2009.
